A Mirror – A Reflection – Of Christ to the World
The Word Became Flesh
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcomea it.
I grew up helping my Dad, who is a self-employed welder / “fixer of all things” who does lots of work for the community in which I grew up in. I was able to go with him on jobs that he did all the time. (Well, when I didn’t have to be in school.)
I am reminded of the he was doing some work for whoever owned this closed down service station. I don’t remember what they had commissioned him to do, but regardless, we were there, me and my brother. And that day I had taken one of those plastic balls that you get in the big bin at Walmart, (or rather, at that time it was probably a smaller local store). I was playing with it for a long, long time… and all of a sudden, I kicked it into a part of the store that was dark. (The electricity was cut off there, so you couldn’t see anything but pitch blackness).
I was devastated. I thought, “I won’t ever get my ball back!” But when I told my Dad, he quickly came to the rescue with a mirror!
Yes. A mirror.
You see, it was still daylight—bright and sun shining. And he angled that mirror in the sun until it cast a light at the far end of the store.
However, it wasn’t enough. There was a corner that it had rolled around…further out of darkness.
So, he went to the truck and dug out another mirror. He positioned my brother in one part of the store, and he took the first mirror and pointed it at my brother’s mirror. And through the continued reflection, I was able to finally spot my ball and rescue it from the darkness!! I don’t think I ever played with it back inside the store again… haha!
You see, as Christians, we are called to be Christ’s mirror to the world. We are called to shed light on the things in the world that are in darkness. We are called to shine the love of Christ into the thickest, darkest blackness out there. The darkness in the corner of that store couldn’t have possibly gotten more dark. But the light shone into it, and revealed the ball, trapped in the murky blackness. The light could not be overcome by the darkness.
The Son of God shone the first light out, and we caught a glimpse of it through our brother or sister. And we were able, like that ball, to find our way out of the darkness. We were able to be rescued from our darkest holes, from the slimy pits of destruction that we were trapped in.
But if Christ Jesus hadn’t put our brother or sister there to continue His reflection on out to us, we may never have come to know Him.
Just something to think about as you go through the week—let us be Christ’s mirror out to the world, shining His light into the darkness, and helping those that are trapped in the lies of the enemy to be freed, to be rescued from their bondage. Because we know what it was like to be there ourselves. Let us not forget. Let us not turn our back and let that light that Christ shines so brightly be lost in the darkness, when our lost friend is right around the corner.
Be Imitators of God
3But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; 4and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7Therefore do not be partakers with them; 8for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 9(for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.
14For this reason it says,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”
15Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
